Layoffs Coming to Nassco; Number Uncertain

Tags: Nassco, Nassco Number

Nassco/General Dynamics Corp., the San Diego shipbuilding and repair company, announced March 25 that it will lay off about 350 workers for several weeks starting in late May because of a federal budget stalemate that has prevented the U.S. Navy from contracting for any new programs and has delayed funding for ongoing ship repair work.

Fred Harris, Nassco’s president, said the company is working with Navy and elected officials to encourage adoption of a federal budget. If such legislation is passed in April, it would sustain progress on existing and planned projects and reduce the number of layoffs at the shipyard. However, Harris said the budget adoption “would not eliminate all job losses at Nassco given the current business environment.”

He said a protracted delay by Congress could result in much deeper cuts, “as many as 1,500, by the end of the year.”

Nassco, the last major shipyard on the West Coast, has a current work force of about 3,600.
